BEING A SCREENWRITER
With The Idea, Canal + reconnects with its know-how to creating original content – feature and episodic films as well as documentaries for the launch of CANAL + CREATE channel . This cinematic advertising that illustrates the complexity of creating an ideais the result of a gigantic 5-day shooting in Kiev, Ukraine, with 200 extras, and 40 Mikros MPC artists during a challenging schedule of 5 weeks.

The Mikros MPC team has been tasked to represent the creative spirit of a screenwriter as a light form travelling randomly into a strange and dark environment. On its journey, the form acts as a magnet and attracts selected items that the scenarist needs for his script. As these items melt into the light form, they permanently transform themselves into a kind of chemical reaction with lightnings, fluids, particles,…, which vary in forms, brightness, and color.
A real challenge for the Mikros MPC teams! First on the creative direction standpoint, the creative mind shouldn’t embody anything identifiable but should not be chaotic. The light form is barely visible, and the artists had to create the feeling of its presence and making it illuminate the atmosphere and the scenery.
On the technical standpoint, the creative mind is represented by a complex simulation of lights and lightings which impact is only revealed through the interaction of the different elements that it attracts. It has been created through indirect lighting method that required advanced technology and considerable computing power, up to 3 hours of calculation per image, which has been a real challenge in production. Additionally, the Mikros MPC teams have created all the constituent parts of the film in CG: the complete environment, creatures, and all the FX effects for sand, smoke and widow explosion. More than 11 different softwares have been used to create this film, and the entire computing power of the Paris studio.

The Idea has been shortlisted for the 2019 Cannes Lions in Craft VFX category and won a bronze award from the Le Club Des DA. It received the Silver Award from Ciclope 2019 in the Visual Effects category.
