MPC helps bring to life Spike Lee and Netflix Film ‘Da 5 Bloods’
“Da 5 Bloods” is the feature film from 40 Acres and a Mule production, which follows four African-American Vietnam War veterans who return to their former battlefield several decades later to search for the remains of their fallen squad leader and the gold they buried with him.
Directed by the Academy Award winning Spike Lee and shot by Newton Thomas Sigel, the film features VFX by MPC, which was led by David Piombino. The VFX team had to do a large amount of period accurate landscapes, gunshots, and green screen composite work. Utilizing our global offices, we were able to able to scale up and accommodate the high volume of shots required.
Randall Balsmeyer, the film’s VFX Supervisor, reached out to David and MPC after filming had finished. MPC’s New York studio has developed a long-form episodic pipeline that merges the rapid-delivery advertising pipeline, that serves the brands that MPC works with so well, with the high-style output for which our film artists have become known for. The result has been feature-quality effects, delivered at the pace of a commercial project. It was a natural progression to expand on that by working with Randall Balsmeyer, Newton Thomas Sigel and Spike Lee on this upcoming feature.
David said of working with Spike Lee: “He is an absolute professional who uses VFX as a tool to tell the story but not be the story. He knew exactly what he needed from us. Our job was done when it looked like we never did anything.”
