Awards season always marks an exciting time for the MPC team—not only does it give us a chance to showcase our work, but it also serves as a larger celebration of the imaginative stories that come from the many creatives within this industry.
We kicked off 2019 in an exciting fashion as we made our way to the VES Awards and took home the top prizes for VFX and Animated Character for “The Boy and the Piano” (John Lewis) and “ Born Confident” (Volkswagen), respectively.
Now in its 17th year, the iconic VES Awards shine a light on the outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games. VES lifts up and honors the multitude of individuals who bring these pieces of work to life, whether that be VFX supervisors, VFX producers, or hands-on artists.
Kamen Markov, Philip Whalley, Anthony Bloor, and Andy Steele—the team behind “The Boy and the Piano”—were awarded the distinction of Outstanding Visual Effects in a Commercial for their work on the endearing Christmas spot that brings us back in time via the singing mastery of the one and only Elton John. Led by adam&eveDDB and directed by Seb Edwards, we created a seamless reverse chronology of Elton John’s career highlights through compositing photo-realistic CG faces and environments across multiple eras. Harnessing a touch of holiday joy and the universal language of music, “The Boy and the Piano” was one of the UK’s most anticipated ads of the year and the spot received national acclaim.
When it came to the campaign “Born Confident,” for Volkswagen, David Bryan, Chris Welsby, Fabian Frank, and Chloe Dawe snagged Outstanding Animated Character in a Commercial for the creation of Bam, a self-assured young ram. Crafted by adam&eveDDB in London and DDB Berlin/Hamburg and directed by Somesuch’s Nick Gordon, our team utilized innovative in-house software developed for photo-real creature work in order to navigate the tricky balance of crafting a charming photo-real character without slipping into cartoon-like animation—Ram encapsulates exactly that.
Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees!
