We interviewed Chris to learn some more about his personal stories and career highlights. Here’s what he had to say.
What do you love about working in animation?
I love the balance between the creative and technical elements of animation, I really enjoy finding the character and story in my animation but also the challenge to create believable and physically accurate movement. It is also a very collaborative job and that is something I enjoy and find rewarding.
Can you tell us about previous projects you’ve worked on?
One of the projects I’ve enjoyed most since joining MPC was for the German supermarket EDEKA. We produced a 4-minute short film set in the future about a robot’s journey to find Christmas. I was the animation lead on the project and worked with the director and animation team to find the character of the robot and help tell the story, it was a challenging but fun project.
MPC is famous for producing amazing creature work, so it was great to work on a project for ING Australia bringing a CG lion to life. I was the animation lead and with the rest of the team we created 5 x 30 second spots.
What were your passions or hobbies growing up?
I have always been interested in art and that was my favourite subject at school. I also love films, both live-action and animated, watching the first Toy Story in 1995 was the moment I decided I wanted to be an animator. Outside of the creative world I have always enjoyed watching and playing sport and games like chess and crosswords.
If you could go back, what one piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I’d probably tell my younger self that you’re good enough and if you keep working hard, you’ll get to where you want to be.
Describe the 3 characteristics about yourself that you believe led to your success in business?
I think I’m quite laid back, hardworking and I’m very aware that I don’t know everything. Which I think is useful in all aspects of life.
Who has positively impacted/inspired you in your career, and what’s one lesson they taught you?
I have been very lucky in my career and have worked with so many people that have helped me and pushed me to produce work that I never thought I’d be able to do. When I first started out there were two experienced animators, who really took me under their wing and helped me learn the ropes. They were both incredibly patient with me and generous with their time, I was very nervous when I got my first opportunity in the industry and their support really helped. “don’t worry, it’s only a cartoon”, which was a good advice when the pressure was on!
