Wrigleys, 5 Gum

Fredrik Bond has directed the new campaign for Wrigley’s 5 gum.  The Ad Agency was Energy BBDO/Chicago, with production handled by Pam Pietrowski.  MPC LA provided 3D animation and compositing for the spot.

MPC was involved from pre-production with input into the design process, Duncan McWilliam and Dan Sanders attended the shoot at Paramount Studios supervising elements of the blue screen stage and the adjacent practical elements shoot.

After capturing the hero actor's performance, some pyrotechnics, ice elements and water tank material, the team then faced the enormous task of designing and creating an almost entirely CG environment for each film.  In the Solstice spot our 3d artists used PAPI to develop the ice shattering effect. Maya fluids and particles were used to further enhance the avalanche.  For the Zing spot our team used Maya particle instancing and some hand animation to create the bubbles. Maya nCloth was used to make the larger bubble that our hero falls into.

The 35 mm and phantom camera material was extensively re-timed and manipulated to work with the CG environment and animation which were then composited using shake and flame.

Overall our greatest challenge was creating a cohesive and narrative driven set of films that were also visually stunning in a short space of time.  The 'hot and cold' and 'sweet and sour' experiences had to be relayed through the atmosphere, color, feel and energy of each film, most of which was entirely created in post.

The ads Zing (:30 and :15) and Solstice (:30 and :15) went on June 29th in the US.
